Smart phone accessories for your e-bike by Peak Designs
Peak Designs is in the business of making everyday carry of your phone, camera, or other goods easy. For this mobile ecosystem, they focus on having a MagSafe compatible case that features their SlimLink technology. With this case, you can connect to a variety of accessory’s, from a bar mounted bike mount, a wallet, and even a small mobile tripod. We have had the Everyday Case for iPhone for a bit now and have put it through its paces. Here is our review of Peak Designs mobile accessories.
This all starts with the Everyday Case for iPhone. This MagSafe-compatible case is slim, protective, and importantly looks good. The material is made of a nylon canvas fabric shell that is waterproof, 100% recycled and Bluesign-approved. It is made of a ultralight-polycarbonate body and has premium aluminum buttons on the side. The case has a slim profile at 2.4mm with rubberized full-surround shock-absorbing rubber. It also has a protection lip around the screen and camera lenses with drop protection up to 6ft (2m).
On the back, there is the square indentation where a few of the accessories lock in to. In Peak Design fashion, there are also two mounting points for Peak Design Anchors to carry your phone with any Peak Design strap.
There are many cycling enthusiasts that work at Peak Designs, so it makes sense they developed the Out Front Bike Mount. This mount does require the use of a Peak Designs case, but there also is a universal adapter available as well. It comes with a variety of collars allowing you to attach to bars from 22.2mm to 35mm. This rigidly mounts to your handlebars with the included hex, or if you want tool-less use you can use the included thumb screw.
The locking mechanism strongly secures your phone onto the mount and is removable with one hand. There is a variety of ways to position the mount, so you can have y our phone in front or flush with your stem. You can also attach your phone in landscape or portrait mode, or position it with the camera facing forward to turn your phone into an action cam. It also comes with an accessory mount so you can mount a GoPro or light underneath.
The Universal Bar mount is similar to the Out Front bike mount in application, but has more universal use. It uses the same ultra secure SlimLink Magnetic locking system. You also have the ability to mount the phone in portrait or landscape more as well. Where it differs is the mounting points to the bars.
Whereas the Out Front mount is secured with a rigid aluminum arm and hex screw, the Universal mount uses a silicone band with a hook to secure the mount. There is a keeper hook on that helps secure the band and keep the excess out of the way. The recommended diameter of bars is from 22mm to 35mm, but it has a full range from 19mm to 55mm. This makes it ideal for mounting on a rental bike, or if you have multiple bikes in the household that would need a mount. Another use case for this is if you have aero or non round bars. You could also get creative and mount this to many other things, like a stroller, tripod, or scooter.
Two other accessories that work with the Everyday Case are the Slim Wallet and the Mobile Tripod. Like the mounts, these both work with the SlimLink locking system to attach to the back of the case. They both could work with other MagSafe phone cases as well.
The Slim Wallet is made just to carry your essentials to minimize bulk. It comes in at only 3.75mm which when empty. You can fit up to seven cards in the wallet, and there is instant card access via the magnetic pull tab. It is made of a 100% durable, weatherproof recycled nylon canvas that is built to last. Moreover, this will not de-magnetize credit cards and is safe to use with most hotel keys.
The Mobile Tripod is made from a solid machined and anodized aluminum. The footprint is smaller than a deck of cards and its average thickness is half of a centimeter when packed down. It has a smooth micro ballhead tripod head that can hold your phone in portrait or landscape mode. There is a magnetically embedded tool built into the tripod as well for adjusting the ballhead tension. On the bottom of the legs is an anti-slip, vibration-dampening TPU material on each foot of the tripod.
Thoughts on the mounts
Overall, the feel and aesthetic of all these Peak Design’s mobile accessories is all very sturdy and nice. Right off the bat, you can feel the quality of the materials. The Everyday Case is has a nice hand feel with the canvas fabric on the back. As for the buttons on the sides, they easy to press for locking and changing volume. This has been mostly positive, with the ease of finding the buttons. But, since they are so easy to press, there have been a few times I have turned the volume completely down on accident. Just some getting used to on that front.
Mounting the Out Front Bike mount is very easy. Changing the size clamp collar is simple as well, and the different collars fit seamlessly into the mount. when tightened with the included hex key, it is very solid on the bars. Having the ability to position the mount out front of the stem, or flush mounted over the stem is neat as well. This gives the ability to run different bags up front as well without getting in the way. When you attach the phone to the mount, it really feels like it staying put. With that said, once you press the buttons to release your phone, it does so easily. The thumb screw is a cool addition if you are going to be changing position of this mount often, or want to film some POV riding.
For us, we test a variety of bikes and switching phone mounts can become tedious. Having the Universal Bar Mount is an awesome way to still be able to use the Everyday Case and a dedicated bar mount. Once secured on the bars, the silicone strap gives a solid grip. Having the keeper hook on there is great to keep excess strap out of the way, and secure the band more. Another spot to mount on the bike is the stem, if the bars don’t have enough room. The only time the Universal Mount didn’t work super well was on the very skinny bars. With the weight of the phone it started to slide down a bit. Using this mount in the sweet spot from 22-35mm definitely is the way to go.
Thoughts on the Mobile Tripod and Slim Wallet
Like the other products, these two have the same build quality and feel. The Slim Wallet really feels premium, and has a nice sleek look to it in the gray color. This is great for when you are going on those rides you don’t need to bring everything. It holds the essentials, plus some. The magnet gives a solid connection to the Everyday Case. Unless you are really going with force putting your phone with the wallet into your pocket, it will stay in place. If you are going for a ride and using one of the Bike Mounts, you can take the wallet off quickly and slide it into one of your pockets.
The Mobile Tripod also secures itself very well to the back of the Everyday Case. It is surprising how thin it is when packed down. I have been using it mostly at my desk to have my phone standing up for calls. It is very sturdy and being able to hold the phone in portrait mode or landscape mode is convenient. The little details like the TPU material on each leg and embedded too make this stand out as a premium product. I have yet to use it as tripod to film any Instagram reels or TikTok videos, but I could see this help you level up your game for that. The Mobile Tripod also comes with a nice case for storage or travel.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for mobile accessories to make your life easier on the bike, and off, these accessories should definitely be considered. The SlimLink magnet phone accessories all have a very solid magnetic grip. I was skeptical at first, but after some use over time, I feel its power. Even tho the SlimLink magnets are strong, it is great that the Bar Mounts have additional security with clipping into the phone case.
Personally, I’ve been a fan of Peak Designs for many years and use their camera straps on all my cameras. It is awesome to see them branch out into the cycling accessories world. Like their camera accessories, Peak Designs Mobile range is very solid, functional and good looking.
