The ultimate vehicle replacement

The Globe Haul LT takes a different approach to replacing your car. Globe delivers a highly adaptable cargo bike with a utilitarian approach. With ample power and an abundance of carry capacity, the Haul LT is an electric cargo bike worth taking a closer look.

Coming in at $3500 we see a Class 3 long tail version of the Globe Haul boasting a 441lb load capacity with up to 60 miles of range. This does have throttle assist for smooth and effortless cruising all around town.

The Haul LT has an alloy frame with a steel fork and sits on 20” fat tires. What we really find sets it up for success is an adjust stem and two-stage seat post to change the height easily for riders from 4’5” to 6’4”.

On the functional side of the Haul LT as a Cargo bike are abundant frame mounts scattered all over and a cargo-ready design for plenty of mounting options.

Globe Haul LT Design

The Globe Haul LT has a 700w rear hub motor with 90Nm of torque. This is Class 3 rated for PAS up to 28mph. It does have a throttle for Class 2 speeds. This makes getting up to speed much easier when loaded up.

The 772Wh battery is mounted to the downtube of the frame and is easily accessible for removal and charging. As a long and heavy electric bike, being able to remove the battery may be critical depending on how you are able to store it at home. It has an estimated range of about 60 miles, which we found to be pretty spot on unloaded in the eco mode. While loaded up in full turbo right around 20 miles seemed to me the consistent max range we got.

As mentioned it sits on 20” wheels with 3.5” wide fat tires. They look great with that tan sidewall, but more importantly, add that extra cush you need for comfort while riding.

A microSHIFT Advent 9-speed drivetrain is fitted to the Haul LT with a good gear ratio for climbing steep hills loaded up and maintaining a smooth cadence at 26+ mph. Stopping power is delivered from Tektro HD-T535 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes both front and rear with 203mm rotors. This is a wonderful combination of brakes and rotor size to provide consistent and powerful braking all day long.

The Globe Haul LT comes with fenders both front and rear, lights and a rear rack. The rear rack has two MIK HD mounting points for quick release accessories of your choosing.

We found that adding a front basket with a MIK HD mount floor boards and a front pannier rack really finished off the Haul LT. Although that adds an extra $600 to the bill with a couple Cool Cave totes and Front Basket. However, we found it to be the ideal setup for grocery getting and daily errands.

Size and Carrying Capacity

THe Haul LT is by no means the lightest cargo bike on the market. That is made up for by the abundance carrying capacity and a well balanced riding experience. When it comes to loading it up or needing to move it around the garage, the weight does take it’s toll.

The Haul LT has an overall length of 77″ and a rear rack heigh of 24″. This is what really has us sold on the Haul LT as a vehicle replacement around town. The rear rack can carry up to 176lbs and has more than enough room for two kids in kids carriers.

While we added nearly $600 in accessories to our test unit, many of those accessories are critical for functional daily use. Fortunately, the accessories are robust and durable and can sure take a beating.

Power and Performance

To be honest, here at EBJ we tend to favor mid-drive electric bikes for their performance benefits and general weight distribution. However when it comes to urban focused electric bikes we can’t help ourselves but enjoy a powerful hub motor and the perks of throttle assist.

On the Haul LT the 700w drive unit and 90Nm of torque seal the deal for power. For example, if it had a smaller drive unit, or just less torque output, the Haul LT would be quite the slug out there on the road especially with some little ones along for the ride.

During our testing we really focused on the overall range and power in turbo mode. With the drive unit putting out peak power for our rides, we consistently found ourselves hovering just above 20 miles for range. This of course is being ambitious and using the fullest ability of the bike.

I wouldn’t say that Eco feels pointless, but when it comes hills this is not the best platform to strive for huffing and puffing your way up. On the flats and around the neighborhood Eco is great and allows you to comfortably slow things down a pinch and enjoy what’s around you.

Final Thoughts

Starting at $3500, the Haul LT surpasses our expectations and we feel lives up to quite a bit of the hype it has seen since its debut.

From a handling perspective, it is very well balanced and encourages you to be able to ride comfortably and confidently. From tight slow turns loaded up to charging downhill at top speeds, the Haul LT floats along and is ready to dive in any direction.

Of course, we wouldn’t be serving you well if we didn’t share some of our thoughts in terms of improvements and what we’d have liked to see on the Haul LT.

For starters this is a full rigid bike and although the tires offer quite a bit of dampening out on the road, the harsher bumps and hits can be jarring. A suspension seat post is must have upgrade for Globe owners and surely something we will likely see in the future.

Additionally with its utilitarian approach and extended wheelbase, it would be nice to see dedicated space for a dual battery or range extender.

Overall, the Haul LT sure has allowed me to leave my truck parked for the better part of the last two months and has not prevented me from running any errands. From chicken feed and dog food at the farm supply store to full on grocery runs, it has ample space to carry everything from checkout.

On the playful side of life and enjoying the weekend. I’ve loaded up my inflatable stand up paddle board and a cooler for a leisure summer afternoon on the river.

The Haul LT is just the right size and has just the right amount of power to really encourage you to rethink how you get around.
