Aventon’s update to their original e-cargo bike
Do you like electric cargo bikes? We sure do, and the update to Aventon’s Abound has hit the mark for us. The Abound LR (long rack) shares many features with the Abound SR (short rack) that we recently reviewed. It has many tasteful and useful updates from Aventon’s first electric cargo bike, the Abound. There are a few notable features, like Aventon’s ACU technology that make this electric cargo bike stand out.
The Abound LR is an update to the original Abound to make the riders experience even better when carrying cargo. We enjoy the Abound and it is still in use by one of our testers, so it was great to be able to ride the Abound LR. We had a chance to ride it for a day to get a feel what what the Abound LR has to offer.
New Features on the Abound LR
The Abound LR comes shipped as a Class 2 e-bike, with pedal assist and throttle assist up to 20mph. Through the app you can be set to a Class 3 with pedal assist up to 25mph if you can ride class 3 e-bikes in your area. The motor is a 750 watt rear hub motor that produces up to 80 nm of torque. Powering the bike is a UL certified 36v, 20ah (708wh) battery that is UL certified and removable. This new battery is also compatible with a few other Aventon bikes, like the Level.3 and Abound SR.
The front triangle of the frame is a gravity cast aluminum alloy which creates a strong and sturdy framework for the bike. The battery seamlessly fits into this frame as well. 20″ wheel with 3 inch tires keep this bike rolling. For comfort, there is a front suspension for with 51mm of travel as well as a suspension seat post. An adjustable quill stem makes getting the BMX style handlebars the right height easy.
For gearing, the Abound LR uses an 8 speed Shimano drivetrain wand has Tektro hydraulic disc brakes front and rear. To help with pedal assist feel the Abound LR uses a double sided torque sensor to deliver smooth and natural pedal assist. Furthermore, the bag that is integrated into the frame now has a combo lock to keep your goods secure.
The Abound LR comes in weighing 88lbs overall, without accessories. Overall weight capacity of the bike is 440 pounds with the rear rack being able to hold up to 143 pounds. The estimated range is up to 60 miles in Eco mode and the price comes in at $1999.
What is ACU Technology
Aventon’s ACU Technology is a new unit found on their new models. This is an advanced Control Unit with features from security to Ride Tune.
Before we get into some of the features available right now, it’s important to note that this is only the beginning of the ACU capabilites. As time goes on Aventon will be able to continue to offer more and more features that will be available through OTA Updates.
The ACU has 4G Connectivity and GPS tracking. This is great with the app to track rides, enable the Keyless Battery (for removal when needed) and Auto-Lock/Unlock of the bike. Additionally you can utilize the Geofencing feature. This feature may not be for everyone, but it is rather convenient in regards to security. Say you only ride your bike in a certain area, or you let your friends/family borrow the bike. You can set a perimeter where the bike is allowed and it will alert you when it leaves that boundary. This is a big deal for security integration. The ACU has an alarm and a when the bike is off the kickstand can be locked. Having the kickstand locked really makes it difficult to move the bike around.
The Ride Tune feature is something we like most with the new tech on the Abound LR. This is something we’ve seen from brands like Bosch and Shimano for years. This allows you to customize the PAS modes to get a personalized tune for each mode that fit your riding style and how you want the PAS to support your rides.
Who is the Abound LR for?
With the addition of the LR to Aventon’s updated cargo lineup, they are taking utility bikes serious. With the ability to carry up to 143 pounds on the rear rack this makes a great platform for riding with a kid or two on the back With the rear rack being 7 inches longer then the SR, you can squeeze two little ones back there. There are some updated accessories available through Aventon, and most accessories are sharable between the Abound LR and SR.
Aventon had the intention of making the LR more of a vehicle replacement e-bike. The Abound SR would be more of their utilitarian bike that is a bit smaller and takes up a bit of a smaller footprint. With the ability to add a front rack with the rear racks, you can make the Abound LR the minivan of your bike quiver.
The included things that come with the bike like the foot boards, fenders and floor boards make the Abound LR ready to be kitted out however may suit your needs to be less reliant on your car. With a price point of just under $2000, it makes this more accessible then some of the other competition with a price points that can be double this.

First Impressions on the Abound LR
Overall, the Abound LR has a very familiar feel to the original electric cargo bike from Aventon, the Abound. The upgrades are noticeable and the bike feels much more refined. We liked that it shares features with its slightly smaller counterpart the Abound LR, and it rides similar as well. The fact that you can share accessories and battery between the two is awesome as well.
With having reviewed the Abound SR a few months ago, this Abound LR fits right in with what we liked about the SR. Major bonus, it has more space for cargo/passengers. But, if you don’t have space to store a longer bike, then the SR is a could be the Abound for you.
With only having a day on the Abound LR we didn’t get to see how it was loaded up with full cargo or with passengers. This isn’t to say that we didn’t get a good feel for the bike, and we know it is capable with having many more miles on its smaller counterpart. If you are looking with a more car replacement style bike to carry those heavy loads, the Abound LR would be a solid choice. The updated frame and ACU Technology give this e-bike some premium features to help you drive your car less.
