A Feature-Packed Upgrade for Casual Cruising
The Aventon Pace has been a familiar name in their lineup for a while now, and the latest iteration, the Pace 4, brings significant frame and technology upgrades. This makes it a much more compelling package than its predecessors. This isn’t just a small refresh, the Pace 4 feels like a substantial step forward, blending approachable design with modern features. Here is our Aventon Pace 4 review.
Aventon Pace 4
The Pace 4 comes shipped as class 2 e-bike, with pedal assist and a throttle up to 20mph. Giving you the assistance is a 500W rear hub motor, capable of a peak output of 864 watts. It uses torque sensor technology, promising a more natural and intuitive power delivery that responds directly to the rider’s pedaling input.
Powering the motor is a 733-watt-hour battery, neatly integrated into the frame yet conveniently removable. This battery is UL certified for safety and can now be detached without a key, either through the new side display or via the Aventon mobile app.
The Pace 4 boasts Aventon’s new side display, providing essential ride information at a glance. Furthermore, seamless connectivity to the Aventon app unlocks a range of features. One notable addition is “Ride Tune,” allowing riders to fine-tune the pedal assist levels to their personal preferences, offering a customizable riding experience.
The Pace 4 features a reliable Shimano Altus 8-speed drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes both at the front and rear, providing ample stopping power in various conditions. The bike rolls on 27.5” wheels wrapped in 2.1” tires, offering a good balance of efficiency and comfort.
The cockpit features a comfortable BMX-style aluminum handlebar, giving you an upright riding position. A suspension seatpost with preload adjustment further enhances comfort by absorbing bumps and vibrations.
Key Updates
One of the most significant technology updates for the Pace 4 is the Aventon Control Unit (ACU), a feature previously seen on the Level 3 and newer Abound series. This integrated system is packed with security features designed to provide peace of mind. Leveraging 4G connectivity, the ACU enables GPS tracking of the bike, geofencing capabilities (allowing users to set virtual boundaries), unusual activity detection, an alarm system, a startup password, and an automatic rear wheel lock that engages when the bike is turned off, hindering roll-away theft.
While these security features are undoubtedly a welcome addition and should act as a deterrent, it is still important to use a lock. Nevertheless, the ability to track a stolen bike and the audible alarm offer significant advantages. The first year of the 4G subscription required for some ACU features is included, with a subscription fee applying thereafter. Over-the-air updates via the app is another convenient feature, so your bike can stay up to date.
Another notable upgrade to the frame is the use of a gravity-cast aluminum front triangle. This construction method improves the frame’s rigidity, leading to sharper handling and a more premium feel. The step-through frame design is available in three colors and two sizes (S/M and L/XL), with the L/XL comfortably accommodating a 5’8” rider with plenty of seatpost adjustment remaining for taller individuals.
Weighing in at approximately 53 pounds, the Pace 4 boasts a payload capacity of 300 lbs and an estimated range of up to 70 miles on a single charge. The base price is $1799, excluding accessories. Our test model was equipped with an optional front rack, highlighting the versatility for carrying cargo.
Advantages
After spending considerable logging in some miles on the Pace 4, the refinements Aventon has implemented are appreciated. The bike feels more premium than previous iterations, particularly with the enhanced frame aesthetics and the seamless battery integration. The gravity-cast front triangle not only looks better but also contributes to a noticeably stiffer front end, translating to improved handling and rider confidence.
The ACU technology is a standout addition, providing a sense of security that may be valuable to e-bike owners. While not a replacement for a robust lock, features like the alarm and the automatic rear wheel lock can certainly deter bike thieves. The geofencing feature, accessible through the Aventon app, may be considered overkill by some, but for riders with consistent riding areas, it offers an extra layer of security. The GPS tracking could definitely come in handy in the unfortunate event of theft.
Aventon has also refined the geometry of the Pace 4, resulting in a more comfortable riding position. The BMX-style handlebars offer a relaxed reach, and the suspension seatpost effectively smooths out bumps in the road. While the Pace 4 has a rigid aluminum fork and lacks front suspension, the 27.5” wheels with 2.1” tires provide a some degree of cushioning. For the intended use we see this bike for, leisurely rides around town and bike paths, the rigid fork suits the bike. Riders seeking more bump absorption might consider Aventon’s Level 3, which features a suspension fork, but with a less upright riding position.
The stock pedal assist modes are well-tuned, offering a natural-feeling power delivery thanks to the torque sensor. Climbing moderate hills in the higher assist levels is effortless, while the Eco mode provides a noticeable workout with less assistance. The throttle offers a welcome boost for getting started or when a break from pedaling is desired.

Final Thoughts
It’s worth noting that the Pace 4 doesn’t come standard with fenders or racks, which are available as optional accessories. However, it does include integrated front and rear lights, enhancing visibility and safety. The display is compact, keeping the handlebars uncluttered while remaining easy to read for essential information like speed and pedal assist level.
Overall, the Aventon Pace 4 represents a significant upgrade, offering a compelling blend of modern technology, refined design, and comfortable riding dynamics. While not geared towards the serious commuter straight out of the box, the addition of fenders and a rack can enhance its practicality for daily use. Its solid build, integrated security features, and approachable price point make the Pace 4 an excellent choice for those seeking a stylish and capable e-bike for casual city cruising and bike path adventures. It’s not too heavy either, which makes it relatively easy to transport.
